What is Herbal Medicine?
Herbal Medicine is a complementary therapy that uses plants or plant extracts to treat illness. Many well-established medicines come from plants. For example morphine comes from poppies, aspirin from willow bark, and digoxin (a treatment for an irregular heart beat) from foxgloves. Like many complementary therapies, herbal medicine aims to be holistic - by treating the whole person, not just the symptoms, to encourage the body to heal itself. Everyone's health and disease are different, just as we look different to each other.
Energetics
As a medical herbalist I am trained in the same diagnostic skills as an orthodox doctor, however I tend to concentrate on restoring balance to your body, thereby encouraging your own healing power rather than treating your specific symptoms. Herbal drugs are extracts from the whole plant, based on the concept that plants contain natural balance and one part of the plant can compensate for the effects of another. I lay particular emphasis on the energetic content of the herbs which I match up to your energy imbalances. For example, if you are suffering from an acute infection, you will need cooling herbs to neutralise the heat that is being created in your body from the infection.
Leave it to the Experts
The potency of herbal medicines cannot be underestimated, in fact they should be regarded with the same respect as pharmaceutical drugs, as long as the quality and source are of high quality and well respected within the herbal profession. I thoroughly research all my suppliers, particularly with regard to sustainability. My expert knowledge of the correct herbs and dosage are also an integral part to the success of the herbal medicines, which took many years of specialist study and practice to achieve. If you are already buying off the counter it may well cost you more in the end.
